Details

As Church Street lies in the heart of Whitby much can be seen and enjoyed without the need of transport so the car can be quite redundant after arrival.

Many top class restaurants and pubs are within a two minute walk and if breakfast seems too much of a chore there are café's serving up along the street. The 199 steps up to the spectacular Whitby Abbey are only a stones throw away and less than 100 yards away you will find the East Pier of Whitby Harbour, perfect for clearing the cobwebs after the night before or a romantic evening stroll!

East of the pier is a stretch of shore 'the Scaur', which at low tide exposes rock pools for examination, sea life and various crustaceans, fossils and the odd piece of Whitby Jet.

Enter the house via the cobbled street into a comfortable reception and lounge area. Here you can relax on the leather sofa's after your journey around Whitby and let the worries of every day life wash away.

There is a TV if you desire or why not sit in the window and watch the ever changing picture of the street outside. Upon the street you may well find one of a few regular street entertainers; for instance a chap sat playing his harp or one of the live statues.

The first floor houses the main bedroom and adjoining bathroom there is ample cupboard space within the original panelled wall. If you are tired after your journey take a lie down and gaze up to the old beams in the ceiling and ponder what secrets they hold from the last 50 years. Perhaps you would like to freshen up and take a shower or soak in a hot bath whenever you desire.

Climb the winding stairs to the second floor and find the newly fitted kitchen and another lounge area. Why not make a hot drink and sit in the window seats watching the street below.

The third floor is the twin bedroom where a large dormer window looks onto the harbour at the back of the house and the 'fish pier' below. From here you can also gain a bird's eye view of the town and the West Cliff at the opposite side of the River Esk. Again the beams and floorboards have been stripped back to their original state, this is a running feature throughout the house. The timbers within the construction of the roof are reclaimed 'ships timbers' which was the tradition in house building at the time the house was built. You will note the purlins are round and tapered and in fact were once ship masts.

As the house is central all the main restaurants, cafe's and bars are minutes away on foot. The same applies to the beach, harbour and fish pier. The famous 199 steps which lead to the Abbey and church are also a few minutes along the cobbled street outside. Nearest car park, long stay, less than five minutes walk. On street parking also available.

    “very good”

There was a mix up when we arrived as the owner was not expecting us on the date we booked and we had to wait a few hours while that was sorted out and the house cleaned. A washer/drier added to the facilities would have made the accommodation perfect as there is no laundry services in the town and we were restricted in the amount of
luggage we could bring as we came by public transport
