Whitby Cliff Lift was opened 1931. It consists of a vertical shaft down from the cliff top through the boulder-clay, leading to a 221ft long pedestrian tunnel out to the beach. Originally there were two electrically operated lift cars, running in parallel, but since 2003 only one of the cars is in use. The other has been removed.
We wish to inform you that the Cliff Lift is currently out of order due to a technical problem. It has just been discovered that there is a corrosion issue within the lift shaft.
May 2013: The lift is currently closed for maintenance.
As a temporary solution a six seater golf buggy to transport people up and down the cliff from Captain Cook's Monument to the beach. The Beach Staff will be operating the buggy under the same arrangements as the cliff lift.
