Glaisdale
Glaisdale is situated 8 miles/13 kilometres west of Whitby. Among this sprawling hillside village are some terraces of houses that were built in the 19th century to accommodate ironstone miners and workers. At the eastern end, the village road drops steeply down into the richly wooded valley of the River Esk. Here is the well-loved, high-arched, packhorse bridge known as Beggar's Bridge, with its own story to tell, built in 1619 by Thomas Ferries, the son of a Moorland farmer.
